Hoovers versus insects

The ecological niche provided a woodland, desert or meadow might be quite different to a dirty bedroom. However, the algorithms used by the cleaning robot presented here could be said to be insect inspired as they rely on the information content of retinotopic panoramic views. The paper describes a sophisticated engineering solution to the problem of mapping a room. Though perhaps of more interest to biologists will be the literature review presented in the Introduction which covers the many flavours of view-based matching methods for navigation.
